Postcard title : Nature Of
Sabah
Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis Larvatus) are vegetarian and
predominantly eat leaves.
These unique monkeys are only found in Borneo
island especially Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan, and listed
as total protected animal in the world.
Proboscis monkeys live almost exclusively
in mangrove forest near fresh water and in lowlands rainforests,
they live in groups of five to fifteen with an adult male
as their leader. Unlike the Orangutans, Proboscis monkeys
can't be kept in the zoo as they will die after a while. Therefore,
the only and best "sanctuary" for them is their natural habitat
in the wild.
The Silvered Leaf Monkeys (Presbytis Cristata)
also called Silvered Langur is a diurnal arboreal species
which lives in troops of 12 to 25 - one male, several female
and young. The male guards the troop against predators and
keeps them together. It moves through the forest on all fours,
and spends most of its life in the trees of the primary growth,
mangrove, riverine and coastal forests of low altitudes. However,
some of them have been observed living on the ground. It weights
about 30 pounds and is 18 to 26 inches long, plus it has an
eight inches long tail. Its coat is a brownish-grey to black,
with white-tripped hairs which give a silvery gloss, thus
the name "Silvered" Leaf Monkey. It has a high crest of hair
on the top of its head, which can be very distinctive in older
monkeys, and its blackish face is covered by long whiskers
that grow over its ears. In contrast, newborns are bright
orange, with black hands and feet and no crest on the crown
of their heads. The Silvered Leaf Monkey prefers to eat immature
leaves because they are more digestible, but they also eat
occasional buds, fruits, flowers and young shoots. The primary
threat to its survival is the reduction of its reserved forest
habitat due to human encroachment.
